Kidding season is ramping up, hooves are growing fast, and winter’s wet conditions are officially here 🌧️
Even though Central Oregon is known for being dry, the recent rain and damp ground have created prime conditions for packed hooves, bacterial growth, and hoof rot—especially in goats that haven’t been trimmed on schedule.
📸 As shown above:
This doe hadn’t been trimmed in 8 weeks. With moisture and debris trapped against her hoof pad, bacteria began to thrive, leading to the early stages of hoof rot. Had this gone any longer, the outcome would have been far more severe.
When damp debris isn’t regularly removed:
• Bacteria multiply quickly
• Hoof scald and inflammation develop
• Pain and lameness follow
• Infection spreads
• Hoof rot can take hold — a painful, contagious condition that destroys hoof tissue, smells awful, and severely impacts mobility, feeding, and overall health
🗓 Recommended trim schedule: Every 4–6 weeks, especially during wet seasons.
