Valentine is a Belfair heifer (cross of a Jersey dam and Dexter sire) born in February 2025, so she will be 2 years old in a couple of months. Belfair cattle are a perfect cross for a family milk cow as they are compact, hardy, feed efficient and less prone to health conditions that plague dairy breeds while still producing a rich delicious source of dairy perfect for a household. Valentine was bottle raised and dam raised simultaneously, so she is very very friendly with people while still having the benefit of unlimited raw milk from her mom. In spite of being a Jersey from a commercial herd, her dam has been our family milk cow for the last twelve years without grain supplementation. She has long teats perfect for hand or machine milking and keeps good body condition on pasture or being fed good quality hay, and her daughter is even more of an easy keeper. That’s grass fed genetics, longevity, production and lactation persistence has been stretched to two years between freshening when getting her bred hasn’t panned out. This heifer is my dream cow, but I am coming to accept that we really don’t need as much milk as a cow produces for our small family and it just isn’t practical to keep multiple cows. The one down side is she is a very energetic and rambunctious little heifer and you have to watch out that she doesn’t climb on you trying to play or mount (a problem when she is in heat) but i suspect that once she is bred and especially when she calves she will settle down considerably. The bright side is she leads and lets you touch her all over including her udder. I am open to offers but not desperate to sell either. The photos are from this past summer so she has grown a bit since then, i will try to get better photos soon. The second photo is of her sire, a colored dexter bull.
