Vintage Webster Model 81 1 Wire Recorder/Player – Rare, Collectible, Great Condition for Its Age
Up for sale is a Webster Model 81 1 Wire Recorder, a fascinating piece of mid 20th century audio history. These machines were produced in the late 1940s and early 1950s, before magnetic tape became the standard. If you’re into vintage electronics, restoration projects, or audio archive MP3 conversions, this is a great find.
Highlights:
• Classic post war Webster Chicago design
• Uses stainless steel recording wire instead of tape
• Built in speaker and tube amplifier
• Heavy, durable metal chassis
• Original knobs, switches, and transport controls
• Great for collectors, restorers, or anyone who appreciates early audio tech
Condition: The unit is in good physical condition for its age, with normal cosmetic wear. All of the bulbs are intact, and the unit is in good working order.
I inherited this unit with some wire recordings that I wanted to convert into MP3s. I added a cable with alligator clips from the output selector that comes out the rear of the unit – see the image. The micro-audio plug fits the input of an audio auxiliary input on a PC. Then you just need some digitization software for a PC. I found it very simple to convert wire recordings from the 1950s to MP3 files.
Included:
• Webster Model 81 1 recorder
• Audio cable for connecting to a PC and digitization software
