Why use a licensed electrician rather than a "handyman"?

1) Legality: Even if a handyman is knowledgable and competent with electrical matters (and some are),
without an electrician's license it's against the law for him to perform electrical installations or repairs.
The law says that performing electrical installations and repairs is illegal unless:

a) you are a licensed electrician or
b) you are doing the work yourself in your own home.

2) Quality: The reality is that far too often handymen are not competent to do electrical work. It takes years of training and testing to receive an electrician's licence. We get many calls "after the fact" (adding to YOUR cost), to trouble-shoot, upgrade, repair or replace problematic electrical installations that are shoddy and usually do not meet National Electrical Code requirements. More often than not such installations or repairs were performed by a "handyman" who knew just enough to be dangerous. Sometimes it may take months or even years before problems become apparent with shorts, open circuits, arcing or worse...Electric shock or fire!

3) Safety: Electrical work that doesn't meet code can be VERY dangerous! How many house fires have you heard of that were due to "electrical causes" (that usually means faulty wiring)?
Electric shock. Need any more be said?

4) Cost: You may be surprised to know that A-1 Electrical Contractors may be cheaper than a handyman! How? First of all our rates are low. Secondly, we know what we're doing and that usually means less time spent. If a job has to be done over because it was botched the first time, it usually takes longer and is more complicated. That means additional expense!

THE DANGERS OF UNLICENSED CONTRACTORS (Or)

I see many on craigslist. With most they are charging the same as a licensed contractor without the overhead and responsibility. You may get inferior work and you will lose the ability to hold them responsible. In Oregon it is not hard to get a license it is also not that expensive unless you are a risk. A unlicensed contractor is like a unlicensed driver other then that you cannot add unlicensed contractor insurance to your homeowners policy,and your home is worth much more then your car. Not to mention it is not fair for those of us who follow the law and obtain a contractors license.

Another very important thing to keep in mind is that if a licensed contractor gets injured on your job, you are safe from lawsuits. If they are not licensed you may wind up being sued. I say all of this for YOUR PROTECTION. If you wish I can provide references that have got poor work,and ones that have went through lawsuits because of unlicensed contractors. References of course help but unless you know them personally many times it is just one of their friends covering for them.If you decide to hire the unlicensed that is of course your choice, All I can say is good luck.

I am a licensed and bonded contractor, with many references and photos of jobs I have completed. I really enjoy what I do, so I take my time and complete your project completely and thoroughly the first time. FOR EXAMPLE:

On my cedar fences, I set my 4x4 posts in the ground 18-24" with 80# or more of concrete. The foundation is the most important part of a construction project for longevity of the product. I then use douglas fir 2x4's as my rails, and either dog-eared, or non dog-eared cedar pickets (#2 Grade) attached with screws for the best hold possible. I don't like using nails or staples because they don't hold as long and could bleed all over your fence. Other companies do this to save time and a few bucks. I wan't to build a quality product!

An example of my pricing is:

CEDAR PRIVACY - (dog-eared, non dog-eared, alternating pickets, or alternating panels)$19.50/ft.

CEDAR PICTURE FRAME - $22.50/ft.

CEDAR LATTICE TOP - $29.00/ft.

3-RAIL WHITE VINYL - $8.00/ft.

I can build many other types of fences as well, (chainlink, vinyl privacy, barbed wire, horse fence, etc.)

I build quality fences and decks, that meet people's budgets. I have years of experience, and many references and photos of jobs I have completed. I focus on QUALITY. For Example:

On my cedar fences I set my 4x4 Pressure Treated Posts in the ground 18-24" with 80# or more of concrete. Then I attach top grade Douglas Fir 2x4's, and then attach dog-eared or non dog-eared cedar pickets (#2 grade)with screws for the best hold, not nails or staples. Other companies use these to save time and money. I do not use these because they can bleed and fall off a lot sooner. Hire a company that is willing to take the extra step!

Examples of PRICING:

CEDAR PRIVACY - (dog-eared, non dog-eared, alternating pickets, or alternating panels) $19.50/ft.

CEDAR PICTURE FRAME - $22.50/ft.

CEDAR LATTICE TOP - $29/ft.

3-RAIL WHITE VINYL - $8/ft.

I also build many other types of fences: (Chainlink, Horse Fencing, Barbed Wire, Vinyl Privacy, etc.)
